Participating in VisitHaltonHills' Fall Photo Contest
Greg explains the story behind his winning fall photo contest image.
Howdy everyone,
This fall, my local tourism agency, VisitHaltonHills, set up a great fall experience. A fall “bucket list” and photo competition, celebrating all the wonderful fall activities and experiences that our beautiful town of Halton Hills has to offer. After hearing about the photo contest, I knew I had to enter.
I set out with my camera in hand, ready to explore Halton Hills in fall. One of the locations I chose was the Barber Paper Mill. The mill was built in the mid-19th century. It played a vital role in paper production becoming one of the largest industries within Halton County. It’s now a historical landmark and unfortunately, a neglected one at that.
I timed my visit with that of the evening's golden hour, the peak of the fall colours, and coupled with the slightly overcast skies, it made for some beautiful dramatic lighting. I set up with my wide angle lens, the XF 10-24mm, at ~16mm. The water was quite low and slow moving, which created some nice reflections of the fall colours in the Credit River. The forest around the mill had managed to catch just the tops of the trees with light as the sun peeked through the clouds. I quickly took a few shots before the light disappeared again.
I entered the photo I took into the fall photo contest. I was then selected as one of the finalists. With the help of my extremely supportive partner, Hayley, I quickly rose to the most liked and commented on the photo, eventually, winning the contest. For my efforts, I was rewarded with a basket of goodies from various local small businesses and I can’t wait to enjoy everything included!
It was an honour to win the contest, but even more so winning in my own backyard as I love to showcase the beauty of Halton Hills and Halton Region through my photography. I'm very thankful for VisitHaltonHills for organising the photo contest, and look forward to whatever else they have in store for the rest of the year!
Until the next post!
